I can see how this can all be a bit daunting to a parent buying video games for their children. With so many different types of systems available it is often hard for someone that doesn’t play video games to keep up with it all. There is Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, PS2, PSP, RPG, ESRB…..

Here I have put together this Parent’s Guide to Video Game Systems in hopes that I might help prevent some poor parent from suffering the shame and embarrassment of not knowing what the hell your kid is talking about.

To start you may want to familiarize yourself with some of the components of a “Gaming Systems”.
Each Gaming System has it’s own technology and is comprised of the following:

Gaming Console: This is the actual component that the gaming media that contains the actual game, such as a DVD or CD, is played on. Without this there is no gaming system as this contains your CPU, memory, and other such input and output ports.

Gaming Controllers: These are your input device for playing the game. These are much like a mouse or keyboard that you use on your computer. Many controllers contain an array of buttons that perform various actions such as making a character in the game run or shoot a gun or some other assigned function. **A PC is a type of gaming system and in turn gaming systems are a type of PC

Video Game Media: The most common type of Video Game Media are DVD, CD, Gaming Cartridge, and downloaded files. **Note that each video game is proprietary to it’s own Gaming System but may exist for several different types of Gaming Systems. So you might find a certain game is available for the PC and for the Xbox 360 but not available for Nintendo Wii or PS3. Each video game will state on the cover what Gaming System it is for.

Viewing Screen:The Gaming Console has to be connected to some sort of monitor or TV to view the game on. Some of the Portable Gaming Systems have small Monitors built into them much like many cellphones now have. In fact many cellphones contain gaming systems along with the rest of their many functions.

This section below explains several of the more popular gaming systems along with the necessary hardware. Some gaming systems may have gaming accessories that are compatible for other types of gaming consoles. But this is not the norm and for the most part gaming consoles have their own “proprietary” gaming accessories and games.

PC:
Some will argue that the PC is not the most popular gaming system but more games are created and played on the PC than on all of the other Gaming Systems put together. The reason is the PC has been around longer and can perform other functions besides just being a gaming system. The PC is often an entry into video games as many families have personal computers and laptops. There are many thousands of video games available for the PC, many of which are not available for any of the other Gaming Systems.
There are also many websites that have video games free to download or play online at no cost. Just Google free PC games and you will find a ton of arcade sites that allow you to play their games for free.

Xbox 360:
The Xbox 360 is Microsoft’s gaming system and is an upgrade from their original gaming system the Xbox. The Xbox 360 is probably the most popular gaming system outside of the PC though the Nintendo Wii surpassed the Xbox 360 in sales. Recently Microsoft lowered what was a very expensive gaming system making it more affordable to consumers. As a result sales have soared and has insured that the Xbox 360 will be around for some time to come. There is a vast array of video games available for the Xbox 360 covering all genres from the hard core shooter games to the more family oriented classic games such as Monopoly. The Xbox 360 is also backwards compatible for many of it’s predecessor the Xbox.

Many new releases for the Xbox 360 are anticipated with zeal from gamers with many titles being sold out within hours of release. You may choose to Pre-Order many popular games before they are released to the public insuring that the game is secured for the customer with the game arriving a day or two after the official release. There are no extra charges in pre-ordering and this is a sure fire way to insure that you get your game before they are sold out.

Number of Games Available: The total number of games available seems to be a bit of a mystery. Not counting the Xbox 360 Live Arcade games there is a known amount of 587 games though I cannot verify how close this is to the actual number of games available. Gaming Accessories: At this writing there are many accessories available for the Xbox 360. Multi-button controller (many various types to choose from), keyboard, face plates (for changing the appearance of the gaming console), guitar and other musical instruments, gaming automobile steering wheel and pedals, headsets, video / webcam, surround sound system, External Data storage (hard drive, memory card), carrying cases and storage units, auxiliary cooling systems (the Xbox 360 has had some problems with it overheating), remote control, dance pad, and other accessories I am sure that I am missing

Nintendo Wii:
A unique feature of the Nintendo Wii, and one that makes it stand out from the rest of the gaming systems is it’s wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detect movement in three dimensions. This revolutionized the gaming industry in that many games call for you to act out actions such as swinging a sword or a tennis racket as opposed to sitting in your chair and pushing buttons. Of course this was a big hit with parents knowing that their children would at least have to stand up and get a bit of exercise.

The Nintendo Wii was the top selling gaming console sold during 2007 and revolutionized the meaning of video games by introducing a video game entitled the Wii Fit, that caused you to get out of your chair and exercise. The game includes all sorts of exercise competitions and has an exercise manager to help you keep track of your workouts.
Video games and exercise combined made for a newsworthy item and the Wii Fit sold off of the store shelves within hours. To date the Wii Fit is still hard to find except at inflated prices on Ebay.

Number of Games Available: Here again the total number of games available seems to be a bit of a mystery. The Nintendo Wii is also backwards compatible with the Nintendo Gamecube. Meaning that you can play old Gamecube Games on the Nintendo Wii. This does not include games released on Nintendo’s Virtual Console or WiiWare but there is a known amount of 518 games though again I cannot verify how close this is to the actual number of games available. There is a list of Nintendo Wii Games listed at wikipedia.org.
Gaming Accessories: Outplacing the Xbox 360 there are many accessories available for the Nintendo Wii.
Multi-button controller (many various types to choose from), keyboard, guitar and other musical instruments, gaming automobile steering wheel and pedals, headsets, video / webcam, surround sound system, memory card, carrying cases and storage units, various play weapons, remote control, dance pad, and other accessories I am sure that I am missing.

Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3):
The Sony PlayStation 3, also known as PS3, is the next in line of the 7th generation gaming consoles. The PS3 follows its predecessor, the PS2, as Sony’s next line of gaming systems. The PS2 was and I believe still is the leading gaming system of all time with over 140 million units sold to date.

A major feature that sets the PS3 above the PS2 is it’s online gaming service, the PlayStation Network. The PS3 was also the first Blu-ray 2.0-compliant Blu-ray player on the market. Other features include its multimedia capabilities, connectivity with the PlayStation Portable, and its use of a high-definition optical disc format, Blu-ray Disc. Several revisions to the system have been made with Sony now offering various versions such as the 20 GB model and the Premium model with a 60 GB hard drive.

The PlayStation 3 is also backwards compatible with original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. Not counting the downloadable games from the PlayStation Network I found 442 games though again I cannot verify how close this is to the actual number of games available. There is a list of PS3 Games listed at wikipedia.org.
Gaming Accessories: Multi-button controller (many various types to choose from), console skins for changing the look or the system, keyboard, guitar and other musical instruments, gaming automobile steering wheel and pedals, headsets, surround sound system, hard drives to 160 GB, carrying cases and storage units, remote control, dance pad, cooling system, PlayStation 3 Eye, and more as I am sure that I am missing some.

These are the newest gaming systems available. Not to be forgotten are the portable gaming systems such as the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the Nintendo DS. These gaming systems are small portable handheld systems perfect for the on the go gamer and for family vacations. The two mentioned do interact with their big brothers the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii respectively. But this is for another article as I am sure you have read quite enough about video game systems for the moment.

Lately, free game websites have better in quality so much that it’s difficult to tell the difference among a downloaded game or a store bought game. Complete Guide – Step by Step — Publish video and player to your website, blog or forum and more

Video news has now become a necessary part on news websites due to its visual representation of information to people. Below are two screenshots of video news from MSN and Yahoo. From the screenshots, we may find that they contain two main parts: video and player. We may also find that the interface is simple but less functional. It is easy to navigate.

Now, what we will discuss right here is: How to easily make video news like these or even better and more functional ones?

First Step: Download and Install Socusoft Web Video Player

I will show you an easy way to make such videos step by step. Before we go any further, we need to download a professional tool — Socusoft Web Video Player from http://www.web-video-player.com

When installation is completed, launch Socusoft Web Video Player.

Second Step: Check Video Format — Convert Video into FLV

Like other software, the input video files only accept FLV format so as to enable output video player to playback clips. If your video clips are different formats, you need to convert them to FLV format first. There is a simple tutorial on its website of converting video files of different formats such as MOV, WMV, FLV, MPEG-4, MPG, RM, RMVB, AVI, VOB, ASF, DV, 3GP, M1V and M2V into FLV format. If you don’t need a tutorial, you may do it yourself. Click “Convert” to launch integrated converter and convert your video into FLV format.

Third Step: Add Videos to Player

Go to “(1) Video” and click the button “Add” to add flash video (flv) files.

Fourth Step: Choose Themes for Player

Go to “Themes” and choose the template of web player for your video clips. There are lots of cool templates. Get one as you like or that matches the style of your website or blog. The program allows you to customize web player in advanced mode. Click to button “Customize Parameters” at the bottom right corner to find out more.

Fifth Step: Advertising Function (For registered users) — Add advertisement and link to video and player

Some people may want to add advertisements and links to video and player, which is considered as another strategy in product advertising and website promotion. Well, Socusoft Web Video Player has such advertising function with advanced templates but only for registered users. That is, you need to buy the program and then use the license name and code to register it so as to enjoy full function.

1) Prepare advertisement image

The format of the ad image can be jpeg, gif, jpg, png and swf. If you want to add an advertisement image with no target link on it, the format of the image can be jpeg, gif, jpg and png. If you want to add a target link to a web page for the advertisement image, the format must be swf. You may use Flash Slideshow Maker, Macromedia Flash, SnagIt or other tools to add URL easily to the image and save it as swf format.

2) Choose advertising templates

Go to “Themes” and choose the template of web player for your video clips such as the template “Advertisement”.

3) Add image to player

Now go to the advanced mode. Click button “Customize Parameters” at the bottom right corner. Then, Click the blank field of Advertisement and get the advertising image.

4) Add link to video

If you need to add target links to videos, go back to “(1) Video” and choose videos that you need to add target URL to. Then, click the button “Edit”. There will be a pop-up dialogue.

Go to “Target URL” and input the link such as company website. Please remember to add “http://” first.

Sixth Step: Publish Video and Player on Your Computer

When finished the above steps, go to the sixth step “Publish”. Click the button “Publish Now” to integrate your video with player. Your video has right now been embedded a cool player. You may click “View Web Page” to preview your web video.

Last Step: Upload Files – Publish Video to Your Website or Blog

1) Publish video to your website

Click “Open Output Folder” and use upload tools such as CuteFTP to upload all of the files in the folder of “output” to your web space. You may create a new folder on your web space first such as “video” for the output files. If the created folder is in the root directory, the URL of your web video should be:

http://www.*****.com/video/***(name of the published html file).html

2) Add web video to your blog or forum and more

You may also add your published web videos to your blog or forum and more. Here is an example of adding videos to google blog.

Click “Open Output Folder”. Then, open the html file with FrontPage, Dreamweaver or Notepad. The html file is the same with the one uploaded.

Right here, I use Notepad to open the above-mentioned html file and switch to the code mode and change the paths like the following screenshot. Please note that you need to input your website URL instead of ” *****.com” as shown below.

After that, copy the code between “object” as above. Go to your google blog and paste the code as shown below. After that, publish the post. You may now view your web video on google blog.

JPEG:
The JPEG format (pronounced “jay-peg”), works best with photographic images or images that have more than 256 colors and gradients, such as the flowers.

Images saved in JPEG format are compressed, which means that image information will actually be lost, causing the image to degrade in quality.

JPEG Quality:
Changing the value in the Quality drop-down box alters the level of compression for the image. Reducing the quality may result in blurring or pixelation, but too high a setting will produce a large file that will take users too long to
download.

A good approach is to decrease the quality value gradually until you notice the degradation of your image becoming unacceptable. A reasonable compromise will be somewhere around this point.

GIF:
The GIF format (pronounced “jiff” or “giff” depending on which side of the tracks you grew up) can have a maximum of 256 colors.

GIF files support transparency and animation, and work best with graphics that have large areas of the same color.

PNG:
The PNG format (pronounced “ping”) is similar to the GIF format in that it supports transparency and works best with solid-color images, but it’s superior to the GIF format as it has the ability to support true levels of transparency
for colored areas.

Transparent PNGs are currently not in widespread use on the Web because older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer do not support them; however, they’re often used in Macromedia Flash movies. PNGs can produce a better quality image at a smaller file size than can GIFs.

Photoshop allows you to save an image as a PNG-8 file (which works the same way as a GIF would with 256 colors) or a PNG-24 file (which allows for millions of colors as well as variable transparency).

GIF/PNG-8 Colors:
Adjusting this setting reduces the number of colors used in any image. This will usually make the biggest difference in the final image. dither amount and type (No Dither, Diffusion, Pattern, Noise)

This setting has nothing to do with being nervous or agitated. Dither refers to a compression technique in which the pattern of dots is varied to give the illusion of a color gradient. Changing the dither will result in a more noticeable degradation for images that involve a large number of colors blended together.

There are a number of options for creating Flash movies for your web or blog. One common option is to use Macromedia Flash application, which can assist you create wonderful flash videos. Unless you master actionscript and programming, that’s too complicated.

If you are a mac user, the option I currently recommend is video to flash converter for mac, which is affordable for most people and easy-to-use, no need to make actionscript or programming. Here’s a quick guide to show you how to use the video to flash converter for mac to convert other video formats to flash FLV/SWF files.

Follow the below steps, you will find it easy and fast to convert video to flash video in FLV/SWF formats for sharing video on website and blog.

Step1.download and install video to flash converter for mac

Download Doremisoft video to flash converter for mac, and double-click its item to install.

Step2. Launch the converter and add video

After install the converter, double-click its icon to launch and in the clear interface, click the “Add Video”, navigate to the video folder and choose videos you want to convert, then click “Open”.

Step3. Customize your videos

1. Select video profile and take audio and video settings
Click “Customize” button next to the “Add video” and in the panel to choose a right profile for your output video in the profile field. Set the video width, Height, Frame Rate, Bitrate and audio Sample Rate, Channels, Encoder, Bitrate. Then press “Next”.

2. Set the output format
Check “Generate FLV or Generate SWF or Generate HTML” to set FLV or SWF or html page embedded with flash video as your output formats.

Tips: You must choose either Generate FLV or Generate SWF or both. If you haven’t check Generate SWF, you can’t choose Generate HTML and if you haven’t choose Generate FLV, you can’t choose Generate SWF–>Play the created external FLV file progressively. If you choose Generate SWF–>Play the created external FLV file progressively, Generate thumbnail is selected automatically.

3. Add some content to flash video
After choose the right output formats, click “Press” button to go to the step3 of customize window, select your favorite background color and free skinner flash player with control bar and special effect for the target flash video.

Step4.Start video to flash flv/swf conversion

After all settings is done, click the “Start” to start the video to flash flv/swf conversion.

Alice is not a toy designed solely to create pretty pictures. Rather, Alice is a full-featured programming language designed for use in teaching programming to beginners on the basis of programming principles that are well recognized within the computer science community.

Alice is a 3d graphics programming environment intended to be a gentle first introduction to students ranging from 6th grade to college, typically students who would not take (or pass!) a programming course.

Elimination of frustration

The Alice project was motivated by the fact that for most first-time students, the experience of learning to program has been filled with frustration. Hours of trying to understand syntax errors in pursuit of a working Fibonacci sequence generation program have lead many students to conclude that Computer Science is uninteresting before they have completed a single course.

The goal of Alice

The goal of the Alice project is to change the first experience students have with computer programming. We believe that Alice will change the experience of learning to program in two main ways: removing unnecessary frustration and providing an environment in which beginning students, of both genders, can create programs they find compelling.

In addition to straight-forward commands, students can also drag traditional programming constructs, such as “if,” “loop N times,” “do while something is true,” etc. Students can construct “If” statements by dragging questions like “is the carrot near the rabbit” or “how tall is the tree” into them.

Although the terminology is intentionally simplistic, Alice is actually a complete programming environment, supporting arrays, lists, functions with parameters, recursion, and an object-based data model. In addition, methods can be stored as part of an object and then loaded into different 3d “worlds” created with Alice.

Alice provides a rudimentary system for writing event-driven programs, making it suitable for writing games and instructional programs for younger children.
Why does Alice succeed?

Alice succeeds for several fundamental reasons
By removing typing and the ability to make a syntax error, Alice removes much of the initial frustration for new programmers,
The ideas of data and objects are very concrete when students can *see* what they are, and
Almost all changes to the program state are visible and animated, so debugging is a much less obscure task it is much easier to realize that “the rabbit moved backwards when I meant to for it to move forward” than to realize that “I subtracted one from the integer ‘x’ when I intended to add one” (particularly when ‘x’ isn’t directly visible on the screen).

Alice 2.0 is free and practical

The Alice 2.0 programming environment can be downloaded free of charge from Carnegie Mellon University. Furthermore, it doesn’t require a Windows installation. All that is required to run Alice is to:
Download the zip file containing the Alice environment.
Extract the files and directories from the zip file into a local directory.
Double-click on one of the exe files that are extracted from the zip file.

Once the zip file is downloaded, further access to the Internet is not required. Many classes for creating 3D objects are stored locally in an area that is called the gallery. However, in order to conserve local disk space, the classes for many other objects are not routinely included in the local class library. Rather, they can be accessed from a web version of the class gallery.
Fits on a 256 mbyte USB flash drive

The entire local version of the Alice development environment will fit on a 256 mbyte USB flash drive, and can be executed directly from the flash drive. This makes it possible for students to carry the development kit with them from one computer to another.

Improved accessibility

The use of the drag-and-drop programming paradigm causes Alice to be much more accessible to beginning programming students than languages such as Java, C++, and C# that require extensive keyboard activity for use. A student who can type a few strings with one finger and operate a finger-driven mouse pad can write Alice programs just as rapidly and effectively as a student who can type 60 wpm.
